Foreigners holding valid international travel documents and connecting passenger tickets with reserved seats may be exempted from visa if they transit through China by air, ship or train for a third country or region and stay in China for no more than 24 hours. If you need to leave the port during this period, you must apply for a temporary entry permit from the Exit/Entry border Inspection authority at the port.

72-hour or 144-hour transit visa-free

For travelers from 54 designated countries, China offers a more flexible 72-hour or 144-hour visa-free transit policy at 41 ports in 19 provinces. This includes many European countries, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etc. Passengers only need to hold valid international travel documents and scheduled connecting tickets, they can apply to the border inspection organs for temporary entry procedures at the time of transit, and enjoy visa-free treatment.
