Shanghai International Home Expo | The Rise of "Slack Life" Home Furnishings: The Resurgence of Lazy Sofas
In today's fast-paced modern life, people are increasingly seeking comfort and convenience in their home environments. Shanghai International Home Expo notes that "slack life" home furnishings have become a new buzzword, with lazy sofas gaining immense popularity once again due to their unique appeal.
The Resurgence of Lazy Sofas
Recently,
a lazy sofa named Olivia Magic Go has garnered significant attention on TikTok.
Within just seven days, it achieved a GMV of $200,000, with total sales
reaching millions of dollars. This sofa, known for its high elasticity and
memory foam features, is made from flannel fabric and is machine-washable and
detachable. Its comfortable and minimalist design has won the hearts of
numerous consumers.
As the
pace of life accelerates, people are eager for more convenience and comfort in
their leisure lives. This trend is evident on TikTok, where keywords such as
home life, comfort, and cozy home are seeing increasing search volumes, with
related videos garnering over a million views. Lazy sofas, as products of a
leisurely lifestyle, combine practicality and comfort, making them a favorite
among many young people.
The Evolution of Lazy Sofas
The
origin of lazy sofas can be traced back to the 1960s with Zanotta's bean bag
sofa, Sacco. During a time of global upheaval and change, young people were
seeking freedom and breaking free from traditional constraints. Three young
designers introduced the concept that "a chair should adapt to the human
body." In 1968, Sacco was officially launched. Filled with highly durable
polystyrene beads, it was lightweight, portable, and could conform to any body
shape, revolutionizing the traditional image of sofas and becoming a milestone
in design history.
Plufl,
the "Human Doghouse": Before Olivia Magic Go, Plufl had already
achieved success with a similar product concept. Inspired by doghouses, two
college students founded Plufl. By posting prototype videos on TikTok and
participating in a startup reality show, they quickly gained brand recognition,
raising nearly $300,000 in 24 hours and almost $400,000 in a month.
LoveSac:
At the end of the 20th century, LoveSac started with a bean bag-like lazy sofa
and has since grown into one of the top 30 furniture brands in the United
States. In the 2022 fiscal year, its annual revenue increased by 30% to $651.5
million. LoveSac focuses on technological innovation, integrating tech features
into its products, such as built-in wireless charging points and 4D surround
sound, winning many loyal customers.
The Development of Lazy Sofas in China
LUCKYSAC,
a brand under Shangdu Home, is one of the earliest Chinese brands to enter the
lazy sofa market. In 2008, its founder, Zheng Qingyang, met with LoveSac and
began an export business. In 2014, he shifted focus to the domestic e-commerce
market and was awarded the title of a "Chinese Iconic Lazy Sofa
Brand" in 2018. LUCKYSAC positions itself in the mid-to-high price range
with high-quality products, offering colorful fabrics and pioneering the use of
EPP particles in the industry. It has also enhanced its brand influence through
IP collaborations and has expanded into several niche markets.
During
the Paris Olympics, a blue lazy sofa from Tongxiang's RuiLi Home Textiles
became a sensation in the Olympic Village. RuiLi Home Textiles, with its robust
technology and quality, seized the opportunity of an Olympic order. The fabric
of the lazy sofa met the British BS5852 standard, one of the highest
international standards, with a focus on waterproofing and fire resistance. It
also used recyclable sponge scraps as filling, achieving environmental
sustainability. After reaping the benefits of the Olympic exposure, RuiLi Home
Textiles continued to refine its technology and optimize quality processes,
preparing for future opportunities.
From the
bean bag chairs of the 1960s to today's lazy sofas, the essence remains the
pursuit of freedom and comfort. The demand for a "sluggish" lifestyle
among Generation Z is growing, presenting more market opportunities for the
lazy sofa industry. If Chinese companies can identify consumer needs and
leverage their strengths, they will have more chances to break into the
international market.
