CIFF Shanghai | The Next Step in Furniture Manufacturing Starts at the WMF
What really happens when a great design enters the factory? Freer curves require new solutions for sanding, veneering, edge banding and finishing. A wider range of materials calls for close coordination across machinery, processes, adhesives, hardware and surface treatments. Faster delivery means factories must not only make products, but also ensure stable, precise and repeatable production.
Over the past 40 years, the furniture industry has evolved from mass production to flexible customization, from standalone machines to integrated production lines, and from experience-based manufacturing to data-driven production. Today, while CIFF Shanghai connects design with brands, distribution channels and lifestyles, the CIFF Shanghai Woodworking Machinery Fair turns the spotlight on manufacturing, continuing to explore a more fundamental question:
How can great design become a great product?
This year, CIFF Shanghai and WMF will jointly launch the Design Challenges · Technology Solutions series. Centered on the real needs of furniture brands and designers, the series explores the key challenges in turning ideas into products, from creative concepts and design expression to material application and manufacturing.
01、From Concept to Production
As furniture products evolve toward more complex curves, finer edge banding, richer material combinations and increasingly sophisticated bespoke craftsmanship, the real challenge often lies in bridging the gap between design intent and manufacturability, and between manufacturability and consistent mass production.
Left: Deng Xin, founder of CARBINE aesthetic home brand. Right: Zhao Wangke, Standing Deputy General Manager of CIFF Shanghai. The two sides exchanged views on the manufacturing challenges of bidirectional bending of 1 mm thick wood veneer and the implementation of high-end furniture production.
CARBINE raises one such challenge: the bidirectional bending of wood veneer approximately 1 mm thick. When thick veneer is applied to curved structures, how can manufacturers strike a new balance between aesthetics, weight, cost and production stability?
HC28 Maison, meanwhile, turns the focus to craftsmanship. As shaped solid wood, three-dimensional wood veneers, shaped upholstery and lacquer finishes become increasingly sophisticated, who will carry these techniques forward? And how can five-axis machining, AI-assisted programming and craftsmanship work together to preserve and advance them?
These are among the defining questions driving the next stage of furniture manufacturing.

From bending a single piece of veneer and running an edge-banding line, to coordinating an entire production process, Design Challenges · Technology Solutions brings real design-side questions back to the manufacturing floor.
02、An Industry Dialogue Around Manufacturing
Design Challenges · Technology Solutions is not a one-way showcase, but an industry dialogue rooted in manufacturing.
Throughout the series, furniture brands including CARBINE, HC28 Maison, NEODKO, MEXTRA, KBH and CHIC CASA will share practical insights from product development, material application, craftsmanship, quality control and manufacturing efficiency.
The series will also feature leading machinery and technology companies, including KDT, Nanxing Machinery, Cefla, Vario, Qianchuan, Supai and Hengye. Covering topics such as integrated smart production lines, full-servo edge banding, profile finishing, wood veneer lamination, profile sanding, five-axis machining, flexible manufacturing, digital factories and intelligent quilting, it highlights how furniture manufacturing technologies are evolving.
By bringing together CIFF Shanghai and WMF, the initiative connects design, brands, materials, machinery and manufacturing systems within one integrated industry platform, jointly exploring the next step from inspiration to mass production, and from design vision to manufacturing capability.
03、The Smart Balance of Manufacturing
In the past, wood machinery exhibitions were about choosing the right machines. Today, furniture manufacturers are focused on greater flexibility, more consistent processes, and bringing new products from design to delivery with fewer rounds of trial and error.
In 2026, CIFF Shanghai WMF will continue under the theme of The Smart Balance of Manufacturing, focusing on the key stages of furniture production. The exhibition will showcase integrated panel furniture production lines, precision solid wood manufacturing, upholstered furniture production, profile edge banding, surface finishing, wood-based panel and plywood production, CNC machining, automated sorting, digital manufacturing software, tooling and accessories, and material applications.
Across Halls 7.1 and 8.1, visitors will see more than machinery on display. They will experience a complete manufacturing workflow, from cutting, drilling, edge banding and sanding to finishing, veneering, assembly, inspection and integrated production lines. They will also see the industry move from standalone machines to integrated solutions combining machinery, materials and components, and from improving manufacturing efficiency to enabling design for production.
Selected exhibitors and key participating brands include: Homag China, KDT, Nanxing Machinery, Fida, Hua-Hua, Supai, Shunde Yongqiang, Yuetong, Fuhao, Haode, Jiangjia, Baji, Qingcheng, Lianrou, Huajian, Hengye, Makino, Jiyuan, Qianchuan, Canga, Witt Power, Weili, Xinghui CNC, Dima, Hongma CNC, Jifeiya…
*The exhibitor lineup will continue to be updated and is subject to the official announcement.
04、From Being Seen to Being Understood
As Chinese furniture brands expand globally, competitiveness is no longer defined by price alone. Design capability, delivery performance, production consistency and integrated manufacturing capabilities are becoming key criteria for international buyers when evaluating suppliers.
This is also bringing furniture production equipment and woodworking machinery into sharper focus. Every improvement in quality, every breakthrough in craftsmanship and every gain in efficiency relies on the combined support of machinery, materials, software and manufacturing systems.
CIFF Shanghai WMF will continue to strengthen its international outreach through targeted buyer invitations, overseas buyer delegations, business matchmaking, online exhibitor showcases and multilingual communications. The exhibition will focus on connecting with key furniture manufacturing and woodworking markets across Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Central Asia, Russia and neighboring regions, and South America. It will help professional buyers discover exhibitors before the show, understand solutions on site, and continue building business relationships after the event.
CIFF Shanghai focuses on design value, brand development and channel connections, building a comprehensive trade platform across the furniture industry. WMF complements this by connecting machinery, materials, components, software and manufacturing solutions. One focuses on design and the market. The other focuses on manufacturing and delivery. Together at Shanghai Hongqiao, they bring every stage of the furniture value chain together, from inspiration, design, sourcing and distribution to manufacturing, craftsmanship and supply chains, creating a more connected industry ecosystem.
