Furniture China Expo recognizes that the panel industry is undergoing a deep structural reshuffling. The 2026 industry downturn is not a short-term cyclical fluctuation but a comprehensive rewrite of the rules of the game. Enterprises that fail to keep pace with this transformation will ultimately be eliminated by the market.

In the first half of this year, the performance of the four mainstream panel categories diverged significantly. Particleboard holds a 45% market share, with the highest consumption volume, but its average price fell by 8% year-on-year amid severe internal competition. There are currently over 1,200 ENF-grade particleboard production lines in China, with capacity quadrupling in the past three years. Profits continue to concentrate toward leading players, while small processing plants can only survive on razor-thin OEM margins. Multi-layer solid wood accounts for 26% of the market, with its average price rising by 5%, making it the primary upgraded and profitable category promoted by whole-house customization brands. Upgrading consumption is driving steady demand growth. Ecological board saw its market share decline by 15% year-on-year, with the market continuing to shrink, retaining only rural carpentry and low-end project channels. OSB/LSB panels achieved 38% growth in volume and an 8% increase in average price, with both volume and price rising together. Their moisture resistance and high screw-holding strength make them well-suited for high-end customization and export. However, the high capital threshold for production line investment makes it difficult for small enterprises to enter.

Five core trends are currently rewriting the logic of industry competition. The ENF environmental standard has become a basic industry threshold, with penetration exceeding 40%. Relying solely on environmental certification can no longer create competitive differentiation. Enterprises need to build traceable environmental systems and develop segmented products for maternity and children's room applications. Over 80% of consumers are willing to pay a premium for transparently eco-friendly panels.

The whole-house customization market has surpassed 3.8 trillion yuan, with downstream brands driving panel enterprises toward brand-building. Customization showrooms increasingly favor panel brands with end-consumer recognition as a differentiated selling point. Panel manufacturers without brand awareness will only be perceived as generic raw material suppliers, facing long-term elimination risk.

Panel exports are experiencing a short-term dividend window, with export orders in the first quarter surging by 67% year-on-year. Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa are the core markets. Domestic ENF panels offer outstanding cost-performance, compounded by the transfer of overseas furniture production capacity, creating robust foreign demand. Among these, OSB export margins are the most attractive. However, local panel capacity in Southeast Asia has grown by 40% in the past two years, meaning China's export dividend will last only three to five years. Enterprises must move quickly to establish foreign trade channels.

Digital transformation has become a survival necessity. Intelligent production lines can reduce manufacturing costs by 15% to 20%. Online ordering systems enable precise inventory control. Short video and live-streaming customer acquisition costs are only one-tenth of traditional trade shows. Digital capabilities will continue to widen the gap between enterprises.

The renovation of existing homes is opening a trillion-yuan incremental market. China has 420 million existing residential units, with 180 million units exceeding 15 years of age. The scale of renovation and remodeling has already surpassed that of new housing. Renovation customers show a stronger preference for high-end eco-friendly panels. Enterprises need to build entirely new channels adapted to old home renovation and home decoration companies.

Small and medium-sized panel brands with limited resources can complete their transformation through three pathways. First, abandon full-category coverage and deeply cultivate niche segments such as children's room panels, moisture-resistant panels, and renovation-specific panels, building single-point competitive advantages to avoid head-to-head competition with leading full-category players. Second, rapidly establish a basic brand system with unified visual identity, terminal messaging, and online self-media operations to accumulate brand assets and break free from low-price OEM competition. Third, pursue lightweight digital upgrades. There is no need to invest all at once in a fully intelligent factory. Priority should be given to launching dealer ordering systems and online pattern libraries, using sales data to optimize inventory preparation and steadily reduce costs while improving efficiency.

Under the convergence of multiple industry trends, the consolidation of the panel industry is a foregone conclusion. Small and medium-sized manufacturers clinging to traditional models and refusing to transform will gradually exit the market. Only enterprises that proactively invest in environmental traceability, brand building, foreign trade channels, digitalization, and the existing home renovation segment can seize the opportunities of industry transformation and secure their position for the long term.
