In this special feature, we step inside the showrooms of leading furniture brands to explore the manufacturing challenges behind their latest designs.

These challenges are anything but abstract. They begin with the bending radius of a single wood veneer, extend to the craftsmanship behind complex furniture forms, and continue through the material selection, production efficiency, and quality control required to create premium solid wood furniture.

For furniture brands, good design is never just about aesthetics on the drawing board. The real test begins when a concept enters production—preserving its intended proportions, material integrity, craftsmanship, and consistent quality from prototype to mass production.

In its interview, Carbine raised a highly specific manufacturing challenge: How can a wood veneer approaching the thickness of a solid wood sheet be bent simultaneously in both directions?

This is far more than a conventional veneering issue. It is a manufacturing challenge where materials, structural engineering, complex geometries, and machining precision must work together. Designers continue to pursue lighter forms, cleaner aesthetics, and more expressive curves, but turning those ideas into reality requires manufacturing technologies and production equipment to evolve in parallel.

The question posed by Carbine points to a much broader issue: as design continues to push the boundaries of materials, how can manufacturing keep pace?

HC28 Maison highlighted another challenge facing the industry. Many complex shaping techniques have traditionally relied on highly experienced craftsmen. Yet as the current generation of skilled artisans retires, fewer young professionals are entering the trade, while labor costs continue to rise.

For design-driven furniture brands, innovation cannot rely on creative ideas alone—it also depends on robust and reliable manufacturing capabilities.

As furniture forms become increasingly complex, can AI, robotics, five-axis machining, and simplified programming make it possible to manufacture sculptural solid wood components, three-dimensional wood veneers, and precisely formed upholstered products in a more efficient and sustainable way?

These are precisely the challenges that manufacturing technologies must address.

For premium solid wood furniture brands, material selection is one of the most critical stages in the manufacturing process.

Visible surfaces must feature consistent grain patterns, proportions must be precisely executed, and finishes must achieve a refined, natural appearance. To ensure these standards, manufacturers often have to reject a considerable amount of raw material during production.

This raises a fundamental manufacturing question: How can manufacturers improve material utilization, reduce waste, and increase production efficiency without compromising grain quality or product standards? It is not simply a question of cost, but one of how high-quality manufacturing can achieve greater efficiency while maintaining uncompromising quality.

This is not a one-way showcase—it is an industry dialogue. Design Challenges · Technology Solutions is more than a product presentation or an equipment demonstration. It creates a platform for meaningful conversations rooted in the realities of furniture manufacturing.

Furniture manufacturers and designers bring forward real-world challenges, while companies specializing in machinery, materials, manufacturing processes, and integrated solutions respond with technologies, insights, and practical approaches that address the needs of today's production environment.

Some challenges are already finding technological solutions. Others still require collective exploration across the industry. This is exactly where WMF plays its role—bringing these questions to the forefront and connecting the design, manufacturing, and technology communities.

From September 5–8, 2026, WMF will take place at NECC Shanghai. From intelligent production lines, profile machining, and surface finishing to material applications, five-axis machining, digital manufacturing systems, and integrated production solutions, the exhibition will bring manufacturing challenges into the spotlight—where they can be explored, discussed, and addressed through technology.

Design Challenges. Technology Solutions.
